Never-Never (Is)land is based on my early experimentations and sketches of the prepared marimba in 2009. The concept of ‘sketching a sound’ – or developing a set of sounds – was inspired during a visit at Musée Picasso. Along the walls of the museum hung several of Picasso’s sketches. One body part, such as a nose or ear, was explored across various dimensions and angles. Returning home to Montreal, I decided to conduct a similar exploration of prepared, isolated sounds on the marimba to unearth new timbral possibilities......
